Overview & Institutional History

The Institute commenced operations on 10th October 1984 as an Automobile Research-oriented Institution under the aegis of the Institute of Road Transport (IRT), Taramani, Chennai, and the State Transport Undertakings (STUs). Pursuant to G.O. Ms. No. 479, Dept. of Science and Technology, dated 26.04.1984, the college was established with the noble vision of delivering quality engineering education to the underprivileged and economically weaker sections of society.

The institute was financially supported through a dedicated corpus fund contributed by employees of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings.

On 26 August 2021, the Higher Education Minister of Tamil Nadu announced in the Assembly that IRTT was taken over by the Government to be directly administered under the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) and renamed Government College of Engineering, Erode (GCEE).

The college is situated on an expansive, serene 200-acre lush green campus along the Salem-Kochi Highway (NH-47) between Chithode and Bhavani, just 15 km from Erode Railway Junction. The campus provides a pollution-free, tranquil atmosphere highly conducive to rigorous academic pursuit, cutting-edge laboratory research, and holistic student growth.

The campus houses dedicated departmental academic blocks, computerized central library, multi-purpose air-conditioned auditorium, open-air theatre, boys & girls hostels with modern hygienic mess facilities, sports complexes with 400m athletic track, medical centre, and the StartupTN Pre-Incubation prototyping center.

GCE Erode proudly functions as the Zonal Headquarters for Zone-XI (Erode Zone) of Anna University, Chennai, overseeing examination and academic coordination for all affiliated colleges across Erode, Namakkal, Tiruppur, and Salem districts.
